When algae multiply rapidly, they consume large amounts of oxygen, degrade water quality, and slow fish growth. To control this without harming fish, farmers add a blue dye to the water. This dye works differently from herbicides. Algae need specific wavelengths of light for photosynthesis, but the blue dye absorbs or scatters that light, preventing normal growth.The blue-colored water also reduces sunlight penetration into deeper layers, further suppressing algae. Because the dye is made from natural materials, it does not harm other aquatic animals.
