@veteran.advocate: Combat trained your body to stay on. Not anxious. Conditioned. Quiet never felt safe, so your nervous system learned to scan, track, and stay ready. That training does not disappear when you come home. #Veterans #PTSD #Hypervigilance #CombatStress #VeteranLife
3/1 Combat Veteran and in 2004, I was shot multiple times in Fallujah. As a Civilian now, I don't sleep but at most 3 to 4 hours a night. Some nights I go without sleep at all. I wake up to every sound, watch everything and everyone in my surroundings and am very direct and to the point when I speak. Debris on the side of roads and highways make my pulse go up, because I've seen what IED's can do, so I have to pull over to make sure the debris is safe and not an IED. I'm tracking all the time every time. Also, I am now numb to a lot of things.

I cannot set with my back to the door. Even at home I set at my table so I can see my doors.

I’ve been out of the Marines since 1993 and I still sit with a wall behind me, constantly observing who’s coming in and out and know where my exits are. It is a duty for life! SFMF

When I go in anywhere I always have primary, secondary, egress route. Once seated or in a store I watch people until I can assess potential threat level to reduce my inner anxiety. It’s good to know I’m not the only one experiencing this.

Left the military in 1972, Nothing changes. Always face the door, scan and read faces, read the eyes, count the numbers, listen for the inner bell to ring. Maintain space, always aware of those behind me.
