@thegaze_: The Procession to Calvary is incredibly chaotic. Hundreds of figures and tiny scenes everywhere. There’s nothing to hold on to, and that’s exactly the point. Brueghel deliberately hides Jesus in the crowd. He’s not elevated. He’s not at the center of the composition. This painting is as much about Christ’s suffering as it is about everyone else. The people who stare. The people who gossip. The people who walk on, turn their backs of laugh at the tormented. It’s suffering as entertainment. Painted in 16th-century Flanders, under Spanish rule, this biblical story suddenly becomes painfully contemporary. Bruegel gave the Roman soldiers red, Spanish jackets and armour. So, this is also about oppression.
