@floriangadsby: I promised myself I’d make at least one teapot this year and here it is.   Teapots can be intimating pots to create, they’re an amalgamation of so many different skills and timing, throughout the entire process, is crucial. Try to attach the appendages too early and you can distort the body, leave the spouts to dry for too long and you won’t be able to cut them into the correct shape or join them easily, dry them too rapidly once assembled and the handle and spout will crack and come off. From a technical standpoint it’s a lot but it’s a glorious feeling when you finally make your first teapot as it feels like such an achievement, it’s the culmination of all the time and effort spent learning a craft imbued in a vessel.   I have to say, part of me misses the days where I was learning to make simple, round bodied teapots without the sharp lines and angles as there wasn’t quite such an onerous of perfection. With shapes like that shown in this video, accidentally knocking and deforming a shape edge ruins the angular aesthetic and the overall ‘tidy’ nature of the pot means I have to be so ridiculously careful as I assemble these. I’ve boxed myself in to some degree and whilst the above might sound like a complaint, I adore the process of working to such a high level of finish as the end result feels like such an accomplishment.   If you’d like to find out more about how I create teapots, I have a few free long form guides on my YouTube channel that discuss each step in minute detail.
