Honestly, I think this is an archaic belief. The majority of our population at gurudwaras is elderly and they struggle so hard to get up and sit down. It inhibits their access.

We should be allowed to sit on chairs because even when we sit down on chairs the Guru Granth Sahib is still placed higher. What next we walk in crawling because we’re higher than Guru Granth Sahib when we walk in. When you go Gurdwara everyone sitting back against wall not even facing the front. I believe some think they are higher because they sitting on the floor but not everyone can sit on the floor for long periods.

Gurbani says everyone sit on the same level NOT sit on the floor. Sitting on the floor was a way to ensure everyone was equal because everyone was on the same level. These days we can bring chairs and tables for everyone even in langer hall. Plus there has always been small area for elderly to sit in gurdwara all over the world because they usually have bad knees.
