But if the one you follow is like the Pharisees, then the end of the Jews can also become our warning. Today I want to tell you: A truly faithful shepherd has at least these three qualities. First, he does not only speak comforting words, but uses the truth to confront people’s real problems. If a sermon is always only: “God loves you.” “God will bless you.” “You will definitely succeed.” but rarely speaks about sin, repentance, obedience, and holiness, then you need to seriously ask: Does this kind of preaching really help you know God more deeply? True preaching is not only meant to make you feel comfortable for a moment. It allows God’s Word to enter your life, expose your weaknesses, correct your mistakes, and show you how you should live before God. Second, he preaches God’s Word, not himself. A true shepherd will not make himself the centre of the sermon. His knowledge, his experience, and his speaking ability can never replace God’s Word. What truly matters is: Has he faithfully brought people back to the Bible and helped them understand God’s will? After hearing a good sermon, what you remember should not only be what the pastor said. It should be: What did God’s Word say to me? Third, his preaching gives people a way forward. True preaching does not only move you emotionally for a moment, and then leave you with no direction when you face real life. If a sermon helps you know God more deeply, and after hearing it you receive real benefit and a clear way forward, then there is the guidance and presence of the Holy Spirit. Such a person is a good shepherd approved by God and worthy of our respect.
