As a professor, if my student can talk to me about the arguments they made and the evidence they used then I assume they wrote the paper and I grade it accordingly. I NEVER assume ai use without discussing it with the student. Signed, a historian who also uses em dashes.

there’s nothing I hate more than a professor who accuses you of using chat gpt just for an em dash. I use them all the time when I write, it’s not my fault I’m a good writer 🤷🏻♀️

as a professional copywriter and copy editor, I am so frustrated that the em dash is the unique punctuation that AI decided to latch onto 🙄 the only people I ever knew to use or even recognize an em dash (until recently) were experienced writers and linguists. It's been a mark of my own writing for years...and now everyone thinks it's ChatGPT. So frustrating!

My school sent out a letter stating they were going to be using a 3rd party website to detect AI written papers. My classmate ran their letter through said website and sent the results back to my professor that said her letter was 80% AI generated. We never heard another word about it.

Any professor that believes ChatGTP invented & is the only user of the em dash should NOT be a professor. Failing students that have been taught for yrs that em dash is a proper form of punctuation is crazy work and nothing more than a power trip.

As an English teacher, I would never assume that a well written paper is AI. I love em dashes 🥹 AI also specifically uses them in very repetitive sentence constructions, often where human writers wouldn’t stylistically choose to use them. When I use em dashes — and I do — I am making a choice in how to present my thoughts. That comes through in student writing as well.

LLMs use em dashes because it has been trained on human writing which uses em dashes. It makes no sense for people to claim only LLMs use em dashes, it wouldn’t be using them if humans didn’t use them.

I've used em dashes for YEARS. I'm a design major and a writer. We learned their importance -- and distinction from other punctuation, such as commas and colons -- forever ago. Long before AI. I hate that everyone assumes writing is AI solely on one quirk in AI.

When I was in college I had an EXCELLENT professor who was a stickler for when to use em dashes, Oxford commas, etc. People can look at my papers from back then and see my em dashes! I honestly hate AI, it’s making things WORSE.
