Lip Gallagher’s downfall is, in my opinion, one of the crudest and at the same time humane representations of Shameless. Lip is described to us from the beginning as a boy with great intelligence and, above all, with a strong desire to escape from his family context. Although initially he is always encouraged by his sister Fiona to continue his studies, at the end of high school his skills will allow him to enter a very prestigious university. Lip, however, wastes this opportunity by letting it slip out of his hands, and only with the time and suffering of adult life will he realize the extent of the mistake he made. As already mentioned, this story is one of the most human and realistic parables in the whole series. Lip, in fact, initially seems to be able to overcome any university difficulties, but later begins to give in to alcoholism, also thanks to the influence of his professor. The humanity of this story lies precisely in this: Lip loses everything due to addiction and becomes exactly what he never wanted to be, namely his father. In the meantime, the boy takes care of his teacher - also an alcoholic -, in which he sees that father figure he has never had, and takes charge of it to the point of being negatively influenced. We note therefore how Lip’s collapse is the representation of his fragility and uncertainties, and of how often the addictions and traumas of the past can take over, even when the redemption of a future full of hopes is at stake. #shameless #shamelessedit #lipgallagher #lipgallagheredit #jeremyallenwhite
