I am embarrassed to say that when I was 11, I too put my retainer in a napkin that was then thrown out by the server. I was given gloves and the 2 large trash bags it could have been tossed in, and had to dig it out.

I worked in a boarding school for 10 years, where the students are responsible for their own dishes/garbage. Lots of lost retainers, I never once fished for one myself, the owner always did their own digging

I have refused to dive through trash for customers every single time they said something was thrown away when I worked retail. I have literally brought out the trash can and said, have at it. it ain't my shit, Im not digging for it
