In 1979, Darlene Iskra was 27 years old, recently divorced, and looking for a new direction. She entered the U.S. Navy through Officer Candidate School. What followed was a career that helped change the history of women in the military. In May 1980, she graduated from the Naval School of Diving and Salvage as one of the Navy’s first three female diving officers. Her first sea assignment placed her aboard USS Hector, a World War II-era repair ship, where she led an eight-person diving team performing underwater inspections and ship repairs. As opportunities for women at sea expanded, Iskra moved into new responsibilities, serving as operations officer aboard USS Grasp and executive officer aboard USS Preserver and USS Hoist. Then came December 27, 1990. In Naples, Italy, Iskra assumed command of USS Opportune, becoming the first woman to command a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel. 🇺🇸 Just 17 days later, Opportune got underway in support of Operation Desert Storm. The salvage ship stood ready with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to support mine-clearing operations in the region. Her command also took part in relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992. Iskra retired in 2000 after 21 years of naval service, but her accomplishments did not end there. She went on to earn a doctorate in sociology and write books about women in the military. 🫡 Her story is a reminder that a new beginning can lead somewhere extraordinary—and that breaking a barrier can make the path wider for those who follow. Darlene Iskra didn’t just take command of a ship; she opened a door in Navy history.
