@fly.with.moz: Why the Airplane Suddenly Feels Like It Wants to Float ✈️📚👇 • • • The answer: D) Induced drag. Ground effect shows up right after takeoff or just before landing when the airplane is close to the runway. As you get within about one wingspan of the surface the wingtip vortices weaken and the airflow becomes more efficient. That reduction in induced drag is what makes the airplane feel smoother and sometimes reluctant to settle back onto the runway. Understanding ground effect helps pilots manage expectations during takeoff and landing. It explains why the airplane may lift off sooner than expected or float longer during a flare. Knowing what is happening aerodynamically keeps you ahead of the airplane instead of surprised by it. When did ground effect finally click for you during training? 👇 . Scary how many said A. Can you imagine if that was true, it would make landing really tricky

I’m not a pilot but, I knew it affects helicopters didn’t think about airplanes even though it makes perfect sense. Isn’t that what the giant Soviet sea skimmers used to fly ?

The amazing ground effect reduces the induced drag and your bird floats nicely. That effect in Low-wings is more noticeable. I love it 🥰

Terrible explanation. Many issues with it. The most important fact is totally missed. It is caused by Air, pushing off the ground and pushing off the airplane a compressional of sorts. Mostly noticeable at a distance of 1/2 total wingspan above the ground
