@eveyeatz: Soup Joumou carries the history of Haitian freedom. During slavery in Haiti, this rich pumpkin soup was reserved for enslavers and forbidden to enslaved Africans. When Haiti won its independence on January 1, 1804, Haitians reclaimed the dish as a symbol of liberation and dignity. Since then, Soup Joumou has been prepared and shared every New Year’s Day to honor the ancestors who fought for freedom. Each bowl represents resistance, resilience, and the right to enjoy what was once denied. It is not just food—it is remembrance, pride, and victory passed down through generations.
