Data center coverage: Over the last week, we spent time traveling across the country and visiting communities impacted by data centers. Our first stop brought us to Lowell, Massachusetts. Meet Jake, a resident of Lowell who has a data center just steps from his backyard. The data center, which is operated by the Markley Group, is in the middle of his neighborhood and directly behind Jake’s home. Jake had a lot to say, which is why this interview will be broken into three parts. In this video, you’ll hear him discuss his concerns about surveillance. As we toured the neighborhood, we observed cameras at the facility that point both along the perimeter and toward neighboring homes. Jake also told us that the company has been purchasing homes in the area, including at least two houses on his street. According to Jake, the cameras record both audio and video. He also told us that, because of the facility’s extensive security measures, the cameras use some form of facial recognition technology to identify suspicious individuals. We reached out to the company with questions regarding Jake’s claims, as well as other claims he makes throughout this series, but had not received a response at the time of publication. Jake says that Markley is seeking to expand their facility and feels that the company is trying to push people out of their homes. Jake also claims that Markley misrepresented its original intentions when planning to move into the neighborhood, which matched up with other residents we interviewed who declined to be on camera. In Part 2, which we will upload tomorrow, Jake discusses noise from the facility and other impacts of living next to a data center.
