i think a lot of people misunderstood Hyungso when he said, "no. i didn't love her. not for a moment.” we already know that, back then, rumors about him spread everywhere, and he ended up living under that narrative for so long that he became disconnected from his own emotions. it felt less like he truly understood what he was feeling and more like he convinced himself that he was incapable of love. but, actions speak louder than words. Hyungso consistently showed genuine care for Jiwon throughout the story (although in his mind he just did to deceive Jiwon). when Jiwon expressed how afraid she was that their store might get robbed, he stayed outside just to make sure she felt safe. he genuinely want to Jiwon's happiness— and mind you, he wrote every details about her. he felt devastated when they were separated, carried guilt, protected her whenever he could, and continuously prioritized her well-being over his own. he was even willing to kill for his wife. those are not the actions of someone who felt nothing. i think the reason he said those words was because he genuinely didn't understand his own emotions. he mistook emotional numbness, fear, and confusion for the absence of love. but the way he acted toward Jiwon— the sacrifices he made, the concern he showed, and the pain he felt whenever she was hurt— already said everything he himself couldn't admit out loud.
