I have told doctors I'm going to adopt this child in the future and I have these concerns and they helped me more when I said that verses " my foster child needs...." * I have not adopted any kids*

Taking a list of over the counter meds with me to the first visit to get signed by doctor so I have permission to use the meds that the doctor initials.

Just do it and ask forgiveness later. Ex. Missing BC, go to city hall yourself. Make the passport appointment and then ask for court order by that date. I force timelines and don’t wait for people to do their jobs.

Letting the doctors help with the best documentation that would help me advocate for my child without coming from me! Me advocating for my child sometimes puts me black social worker note book or being put in time out! 😬😬

Asking for dates when it will be done. Especially court orders, reminding the gal to have the judge put a dime by date, then ask for a review hearing.

document everything, send follow up emails after every interaction with follow up dates. make relationships with medical provider offices. my emails look like this: Thank you so much for meeting with me today. as we discussed, my hope is that visitation with the grandmother can start within the next week. you stated that you would speak to your supervisor and let me know her decision. as today is friday, i will check in with you next wednesday to get an update and plan next steps. i am copying the CASA and resource worker on this email so that we're all on the same page. Thank you so much for everything you do, I look forward to speaking with you on Wednesday, if not before.

A lot of foster kids get moved a lot so they’re grades tend to fail and need more assistance with schoolwork.. I have found a ton of difference, places or organizations that will have scholarships to Foster for free tutoring.

The wheels move SLOW. So I start asking about 6 months before it becomes an issue. I ask to take the kids out of state when I book the vacation. So that way they can ask bios or the judge if needed. Also, check your children’s hospital for resources. Ours has a foster care clinic and a drug exposed infant clinic. The foster care clinic can do a comprehensive medical exam. They also have new car seats, blankets, cribs, diapers, wipes etc. So many resources. They can also arrange dental, therapy, specialist visits, etc.

Definitely self referring for as many services as possible. After a few years of doing this, and it’s been so helpful to develop relationship relationships with many local therapist. This is helped in getting services started more quickly.

I have every medical document in a binder I take it to all appointments and meetings. I document all of my asks and we have a fantastic pediatrician who has helped us get referrals. I also network with other foster parents to figure out how they are getting resources and they have been great. I also had to go to the director when I was not getting the support I needed from the worker and the supervisor.

Educating medical and psychiatric providers about the system and the rules. I’ve explained to several doctors the process of informed consent process in our state and why it works that way. It helps them be more prepared to work with all foster youth.

Also connecting with other social workers who may have other resources. The social worker at our counties behavior. School had some great connections that helped services get started more quickly.

When they thought we were going to say no after the first weekend they put a lot in. They got us a parenting therapist and we begged to keep extending. She helped us out tremendously. Told us what to ask for especially when the first therapist wasn’t working out for the kids. Putting everything in an email helped tremendously and our case worker was so great to work with that it helped on so may occasions. Once we got their primary doctor to sign off on medication, certain over the counter medicine can be prescribed with their insurance which helped too. I must say I love having our own support advocate too.

When we hit a “roadblock” I’ll call everyone. I know everyone is busy, and so am I but the kids in my care are IMPORTANT AND WORTHY OF YOUR TIME. For example Ive been working on getting the kiddos passports for months now after postponing our trip to Greece and Spain. If there’s caseworker would say “yeah we got that part of the paperwork to the county attorney, haven’t heard anything” no worries I’ll call the county attorney, I’ll call the gal, I’ll call the supervisor. So far no one seems to have “blacklisted” me for getting things done. With this method all three kiddos got passports yesterday, where if I would have been quiet idk if it would have been done yet. All the love to our caseworkers tho because they are great!

Chiropractors are covered in state insurance. Most kids are tightly wound, and it helps to introduce safe touch, if and when they want it. I also do hair care at the schools for hair design. It feels like a spa treatment, it’s super inexpensive, so you can go often. (After they are comfortable, I get a facial while they get cuts!! If they are older.)
