🎤 I sat in on a hiring process. Young man (23) came in a very wrinkle black suit white shirt. 1st he stated his name then apologized for his clothing. Spoke very well. . He shared he w is homeless, this was all the shelter had and it was clean. He was one of the best employees and still growing strong got married to a co-worker now has kids. Never judge.

I dress up every single time! If I’m on a zoom, I’m in a blouse and blazer, in person- suit. Here’s a question, why is it some hiring managers wares hoodies or t-shirts with baseball hats for an interview that I wore a suit to.

Absolutely not! Even if the job is a janitor position! However as a hiring manager, I’d pull the person aside and ask if that was all that they had, before I dismissed them!

Depends on the job field. I understand dress one level higher. However when I got out the service I went to a blue collar job wearing a collar shirt but the day to day outfit was a tshirt and jeans. I was told I was overdressed and almost lost out on the job. I have started finding the building a few days prior and noticing the day to day dress of the environment

Clothes don’t tell you how well or even if they can do the job. Clothes primarily tell me if you’re paying attention to the company, the job, your audience and possibly your approach to a seemingly important situation.

No, as a former hiring manager and a current interview candidate I would not. To me it’s about respect and preference.

It really depends on the role, company culture, and how you show up overall. Interviews are about alignment as much as appearance. Being intentional about those choices helps you avoid misreads. That’s something we focus on at ntro.io, helping people prepare with context and confidence.

I was forced to endure interviews at an international investment bank: Snotty college graduates who thought they were doing us a favor by showing up. Overconfident established brokers who ALSO acted like interviewing was a formality to get through. FINALLY we found an individual who was polite, attentive and asked pertinent questions. I have hated interviewing since the early 2000s.

If the interview is online, I would rather wear a t-shirt or hoodie with a blazer than a shirt and tie. However my mother always said if you have to ask the answer is no.

To be honest, yes. You never know what the candidate has going on. We have to look at what the candidate brings to the table not the cloths.

Once you’re hired and that’s the culture of the company, then show up that way. But if you’re making me an over six figure offer, I wanna show you that I’d take that offer seriously and act like I got dressed this morning on purpose.
