I homeschooled one of my boys 4th-12th so I’m very familiar. I’ve also met unschoolers, most it did not turn out well and many times it was just lack of not wanting to do any work.

I unschooled my kids until they were about middle school aged and when they went into public school they had to be tested since I didn't have any "transcripts" or grades or records of what they knew. They both tested above expected grade levels. This, after having no plan, no structure, and only dedicating 2 hours a day to actively learning (the rest of the day naturally learning). They're 21 and 23 now and doing as well as can be.

I did unschooling with my hearing impaired son(7th to 12th grade). When he was 18 he took the GED, scored very well...he went to trade school and is a mechanic. It was hard but so much better than the 4 hour arguments every night about behavior at school and home work.example of behavior was telling the teacher to repeat the lesson because she was talking to the blackboard giving examples...she stated if he had been listening she would not have to repeat the information, and he said if she had read his IEP she would know he reads lips. I know my son was difficult to teach and needed more support than his IEP could provide.

I think home schooling is ridiculous but I support their right to try it because it removes a lot of cranks from the system.
