I feel so seen. In a capitalist world, people see high quality as sellable items and that’s their interaction with art. I think it’s such a negative view point to be annoyed with people who say we could sell our stuff!

To me I absolutely know that it is a compliment and an acknowledgment of my skills as an artist. However it is exhausting to have that same conversation over and over again with every person I talk to about my knitting. I’m also an art teacher so part of what I do is turn the conversation into one about how doing things for the enjoyment of them has so much value and how monetizing hobbies can impact our experiences of them

This happened to me today. I mean, this is gonna sound ridiculous, but I make these crazy dog dresses only because they crack me up, like I’m making them and laughing because they’re so ridiculous so no I don’t sell my dog dresses.😂😂😂

i made my dad a hat last year and he loves it and was showing it off to his friends (I was there). one of them complimented me in this way and I said thank you, coming from this same perspective as you, and my dad chimed in with how I had spent 30 hours on it and a fair price would be about $1000🥺 he's not an artist but appreciates it, and his friends thought it was even more impressive after knowing how long it took and were asking me about it. obviously this kind of interaction can't usually happen, I just wanted to share a lovely time it did :))

As a sewist that sews a lot of my own clothes I appreciate this perspective. I also say thank you and engage them in dialogue. Folks often share I’ve always been wanted to learn to sew. I see it as a chance to connect.

Thank you for this perspective. I very much agree that it’s a compliment to hear “you should sell that”. Everything is a business in America and that sucks. But if we can start to break it down little by little by spinning around asking questions we can start to change that.

I just want to celebrate people and their achievements! not everything needs to be made into a business! it takes joy out of a craft oftentimes and people are rarely willing to pay the actual price that a handmade, high quality item would cost. Let's just root for each other outside of capitalism

i always say "i mean, yeah, but this yarn costs this much, and then i spend this many hours working on this piece, so it would come out to this much money" and they're always "😬 oh ok that's a lot of money!! and time!!!! i wish i had the skills"

I think part of it to is not every hobby needs to be monetized. Shocker but people should be able to have a hobby just for the pure enjoyment of creating. I think this is heavily an American thing because of the raging hustle culture

I have the same thing with cross stitch embroidery! my ex used to say I should sell them but projects take ages and fabric and floss aren't cheap! I sometimes make things for friends where they just pay for material, but it I were to ask a fair hourly wage, it would be so incredibly expensive

I had someone ask me if I sell my work when I was wearing my Horseshoe crab sweater, I thanked her and said no it would cost at least x amount with the hours of work and the yarn. I got a "wow" from her.
