@spcorrigan: Something valuable keeps leaking out of Indonesia. Everything looks busy on the surface. Smelters, output numbers, new industrial zones. But when you follow where the real gains end up, they rarely stay where the work is done. So what part of Indonesia’s strategy is quietly missing from the design? #indonesia #prabowo #politik
China’s finished products are so cheap, Indonesian companies entreprenurs can’t come close to competing. They know it. Therefore they don’t invest (in mfg), rather buy from China.

Corruption is too high over there. To open a factory you need to bribe a lot of people just to get approval. That's why foreign investors give up at the end and look elsewhere like Vietnam or Thailand.

government earns directly from selling raw materials and they grow so big round and fat you wouldn't believe. those who decide on this and can make a change, have no incentive (or knowledge) to invest in education and everything else, unless people rise again. the dutch system is still in place (+ US playbook) only thing that changed is leadership from white colonizer to brown.

the cramped, overloaded port of Jakarta is a huge logistical bottleneck and a reason why middle industries have failed to establish. doesn't help that we don't have enough industrially zoned land to accomodate the development of said "middle" industries

this is in correct. if you look at margin per ton of pure metal contained in ore or in intermediate product or in semi finished or in finished producr, profit at mining side are the highest...
but if you ask from the multiplier effect to the country economy, then the answer is going further downstream.

GEO Skinner :
investing in Indonesia is not easy. they don't trust foreign companies, and make huge hurdles and hoops to jump through, so in return foreign companies don't trust the Indonesian government, which itself is unstable corrupt and can't agree on anything. the chop and change of laws, rules and moving goalposts every month/year makes it a nightmare. so why would foreign industry invest $billions in indonesia just to be betrayed 1,2,3,4-5years down the line? (churchill mining for example). however, Indonesia could be profitable for everyone if they got their act together. 🤔
