What happens when school teaches obedience before it teaches safety? At the Brave New Voices 2026 Semifinals, Team Houston turns roll call into an indictment. “Gentle. Obedient. Quiet.” At first, the words sound like classroom expectations. Then the poem starts showing what they can become. First grade becomes hide-and-seek — except the “seeker” is gun violence, and students have until the first shot to hide. Sixth grade becomes the quiet game — where girls are taught not simply to lower their voices, but to swallow fear, violation and anger. By high school, even their names begin disappearing. Gentle. Obedient. Quiet. Different students reduced to the same expectation: do not disrupt the system. One of the sharpest turns comes near the end: “Schools force us to be quiet so we can’t learn to be anything else.” Then “defiant” begins changing shape. Delinquent. Detained. Dead. A diploma becomes a criminal record. A criminal record becomes a gravestone. And suddenly the opening roll call means something completely different. The poem ends by calling the names again: Gentle — here. Obedient — here. Quiet — here. Then one final name: Defiant. This is not simply a poem about classroom discipline. It is about what happens when young people are taught that survival, womanhood, safety and respectability all require silence. Team Houston brought that argument to the Brave New Voices stage. Some poets and spoken-word performances featured by KMOB1003 may also appear in the KMOB1003 Voice Gallery as we continue building space for voices that refuse to disappear inside the room. Watch. Listen. Then tell us what line stayed with you. #p #poetrystatus #poet #poetry #poetrylovers #kmob1003radio
