The SS El Faro was a U.S.-flagged cargo ship operated by Tote Maritime. Built in 1975, it was a roll-on/roll-off container vessel that regularly transported goods between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. On September 29, 2015, El Faro departed Jacksonville on one of its routine voyages. During the journey, Hurricane Joaquin began to form and rapidly intensified in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite receiving weather reports, the ship continued on a course that brought it dangerously close to the hurricane’s projected path. By October 1, 2015, Hurricane Joaquin had strengthened to a Category 3 storm. El Faro encountered extreme weather conditions, including violent winds, massive waves, and heavy seas. During the storm, the ship began taking on water, and its main engine lost power. Without propulsion, the vessel could not maneuver away from the hurricane or maintain stability. The combination of flooding, loss of power, and severe weather eventually caused the ship to list heavily and sink east of the Bahamas. All 33 crew members on board lost their lives, and no distress signal was successfully completed before the vessel disappeared. The wreck of the SS El Faro was discovered later in October 2015 at a depth of approximately 15,000 feet (4,600 meters). Investigators were able to recover the ship’s Voyage Data Recorder, which provided crucial audio and data from the bridge during the final hours of the voyage. The investigation, led by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), concluded that the sinking was caused by a combination of poor decision-making, inadequate weather routing, and technical failures. The report also criticized outdated ship design, insufficient safety systems, and ineffective bridge resource management. The loss of the SS El Faro is considered one of the deadliest maritime disasters in modern U.S. history.
