Just FYI for folks reading this: The medieval period lasted around 1000 years. Castle life would have varied wildly depending on time, location, and the structures purpose. Always fact check for specific details before believing broad statements about an entire continent during a whole millennia.

Yes, the people who built such greatness loved filth and couldn’t figure out how to change out straw. Be for real.

If you love medieval castles I recommend to visit Malbork castle in Poland, it's the world's largest castle made out of bricks, it's gorgeous and very well preserved ♥️

The fake history hunter :
rushes were usually woven into mats, creating a nice smelling carpet. the idea that they were full of filth and rarely replaced or cleaned is based on a single assumption by a foreign tourist after the middle ages. people tried this and found that there wasn't much dirt at all. garderobes weren't smelly, the waste fell far. the hanging clothes there is likely a misconception. castle walls were painted, there were rugs, tapestries, etc. many of the rooms were clean, comfortable and cozy.

The “dried grass” you mentioned was calked thresh in some areas. It was difficult to keep the thresh in rooms as people walking would drag it so they put bars on the floor to keep the thresh inside. Its why we call the transition between rooms a “threshold”

Saw many castles when visiting Ireland. The Three Head Castle was one of my fav. It’s 800 years old, build on a cliff. The Atlantic Ocean is on both sides with a natural lake in the middle. It was surreal; straight out of a fantasy novel. My other fav is the Blarney castle, in Cork. Famous for the gab stone.

Medieval History :
I'm sorry, but there's so much misinformation here. The inhabitants didn't sleep on the floor, nor was there only one large fireplace. Castles had several stoves, tiled stoves, and coal pans took care of the rest. No straw was scattered on the ground; there is only one source that claims this for England, and that source refers to mats, similar to tatami mats. People ate more meat than we do today, regardless of social standing. Castles were not primarily fortresses. Fortresses were fortresses. Castles were the seat of the nobility. The nobility constantly received subordinates, embassies, and liege lords in their castles. Accordingly, the rooms of a castle were richly furnished.

I always wonder how in medieval times people were so dirty but thousands of years before people knew how to keep clean, smell nice etc like Cleopatra and the Roman’s. Like how did we kinda go backwards there for a while. These large brains and ppl couldn’t figure out a sewage system and a way to bathe each day?
