Sustenance Math: 1/2 bushel is 75 cups, hickory nuts are 1/3 nut and 2/3 shell. 1/3 of 75 is 25 cups. Hickories have about 750 calories per cup. 750 calories x 25 cups =18,750 calories!

I'm from Virginia... yes they are very hard. I remember as a child my great grandmother would 🪑 and patiently pick the nuts from the shell with a sewing needle.🥰

My dad gsthered up, cracked and picked hickory nuts. Mom would grind them then add them to a brown sugar fudge she made. Perfection!
