@sacred_psychiatry: Non-stealing from the present: A yogic teaching that changed everything Have you ever heard of the yamas and niyamas? They're a set of ethical guidelines for living a meaningful life - almost like a yogic version of the Ten Commandments. The other day, my yoga teacher mentioned one of them: asteya, non-stealing. Traditionally, it means not taking what doesn't belong to you, but she offered a metaphor that completely reframed it: When we ruminate on the past or worry about the future, we're actually stealing from the present moment. Have you ever thought about it that way? I hadn't, and it landed with so much clarity. Later in the same class, during a seated twist, she offered another gem. As we turned our torsos and looked back over our shoulders, she said: "Look back with compassion." How often do we look back with judgment, blame, or self-criticism? How rarely do we look back with tenderness? Imagine how your inner landscape might shift if the past were met with compassion and the present moment were protected from being stolen by regret or anxiety. This teaching feels especially relevant as we navigate these intense times of change. Every moment we spend replaying old hurts or projecting future fears is a moment stolen from the only time we actually have - right now. What if we could guard the present moment as fiercely as we would protect something precious? What if we could turn toward our past selves - all the mistakes, the learning, the growing - with the same tenderness we'd offer a dear friend? What does non-stealing from the present and looking back with compassion bring up for you? Share your reflections below! Ready to deepen your mindfulness practice? It has taken many years of growth to look back with compassion. I did the best with the info I had at that time. Sometimes we can only learn things that take us to a time!

This is not a suitable place to answer this thoroughly but I’ll share a tiny bit of my experience. While I recognize all the good intention in these sayings I find the positive/beneficial/healing content of them questionable. Just the first one; what am I looking back at? Trauma? Abuse? Losses? Regrets? It’s me in the present that needs compassion. The negative experiences that hurt me don’t deserve an ounce of compassion. They need to be recognized for the harmful experiences they were. I find sayings that sound so sage and that are used to make us feel wise are often too vague to be really helpful and can even have the reverse effect intended just like, “everything happens for a reason” nonsense
