@dogs.rescue.usa2: Chico is only a year and a half old. He weighs just 25 pounds. And he was returned to the shelter for being too calm. I still can’t believe that sentence is real. Too calm. When I visited him, Chico was friendly. He came forward. He engaged. He wanted connection. He wasn’t shut down or withdrawn — he was present, curious, and open, the way a dog is when they still believe people might be kind. And somehow, that still wasn’t enough. He left the shelter once. Thought he was finally safe. Thought that was his life now. And then he was brought back and put behind bars again — not because he did anything wrong, but because being calm wasn’t what someone wanted after all. Chico is small, and dogs like him are often passed over for reasons that make no sense. They don’t need to perform. They don’t need to be “more.” They already are enough — exactly as they are. He deserves someone who understands that calm is a gift. That gentleness is strength. That friendliness without demands is rare.
