Fawning is also a survival tactic that particularly women are stigmatized for

Police, law degrees and judges should have mandatory training in what trauma responses are/look like.

I think it’s important to underline that when a trauma is occurring, you’re not consciously choosing anything. Your subconscious makes these decisions based on what the safest thing to do is, in that moment. It might seem like you’re choosing something but really you are in survival mode, where staying alive/safe is the only goal.

Also dissociating isn‘t a choice. It‘s a protection mechanism of your brain. When your brain gets the sense that your surroundings are so damaging you wouldn‘t be able to handle it, it tries to take you out of it to avoid potential harm.

Freezing/fawning is not a choice. You used “choice/choose” many times in this video.

After the SA, I invited my abusar to eat pizza because I was trying to convincente myself that was just a weird situation and everyting was ok, even if I felt dirty and umcorfotable. Later I found out, when I heard someone said "No means no", and I remembered that I said no multiple times and he didn't listened to me, so it was actually SA and was awfull

Cognitive dissonance can lead to disassociation and our minds blocking traumatic memories.

It felt like an out of body experience. I just froze and prayed for it to be over.

This type of article and information is so important. Even when it comes to consent, people are usually focused on getting a yes as opposed to caring about whether the other person actually wants to or enjoys doing something.

This is a core part of my consent education curriculum. Caring partners need to know what someone who isn’t 100% in looks and acts like so there’s NO excuse to continue. SA is so misunderstood and students should receive accurate information and real skills to craft consent!!!

When I teach people about trauma responses, I deliberately put them in this order: Freeze, Flight, Fight (and then explain Fawn). The most common response is not fight. It’s freeze. And flight can also look like freeze if there is nowhere to physically flee to.
