@mtn.alice: I think pushing myself in the wilderness only reminds me more of my interconnectedness with all other beings. We all owe it to each other to be accountable.
in my corner of the world (Seattle) this seems to have gotten much worse recently. there are two videos on particular from last year that widely circulated on social media, one of a skier on Mt Baker who skied way to fast down an unknown glacier and needed to jump across a HUGE crevasse (and I say this as a skier that has jumped crevasses in intentional and measured situations). And another of a climber soloing the north ridge of Mt Baker, who was clearly far out of his depth and had no business on the route and survived only by a stroke of mere luck. Unfortunately comments that try to step in to correct/communicate that these videos are not an appropriate way to recreate only are seen as "engagement" by the algorithms which leads them.to be seen by many more. The feedback loop here is crazy

It’s britney’s bitch :
My father, a man from Illinois (there’s not even one hill in this whole state) who can’t even run a mile now thinks he needs to hike/ climb to Everest base camp. Thank god he settled for base camp and not the damn mountain but come on

Also reflective of a general cultural turn towards zero accountability for the broader cultural impact of individual decisions.

absolutely, it's like people forget that media is all storytelling and meaning making. That is inherently how we influence culture

Yup, just like viral police behavior that taints a whole institution as ‘the enemy’, people need to zoom out and think critically about how the media shapes discourse and adjust accordingly. View count is the leverage point for money and consequently culture.. this shift is destroying humanity

“The best climber in the world is the one having the most fun”- Alex Lowe. I have lived by this in my climbing career. Have fun and in terms that means get home safe to tell that tale.

speaking from experience; alex influenced me to start climbing again which is great- while i do that listening to his advice knowing i do not have his point of view and mindset, and everytime he talks about free soloing he stresses that so much
