Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was an Iraqi military and political figure. He served as the Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and was the Secretary-General of Kata'ib Hezbollah. He was killed in a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020, alongside Qasem Soleimani. Regarding Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Akram al-Kaabi, they were both influential leaders of Iraqi armed factions and cooperated within the framework of the Popular Mobilization Forces during the campaign against ISIS after 2014. They were involved in coordinating military operations in several major battles against ISIS. How his role is viewed depends on perspective: Supporters credit him with playing a major role in organizing and leading forces that helped defeat ISIS in battles such as Tikrit, Fallujah, and Mosul. Critics point to his designation by the United States as a terrorist, his alleged involvement in the 1983 Kuwait bombings, and accusations of supporting Iran-backed militant activities. These allegations have been rejected by his supporters, who argue they are politically motivated. As a result, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis remains a highly controversial figure whose legacy is viewed very differently depending on political and historical perspectives.
