I am about to be done with my 2nd year of med school and I have been wrestling with wanting to be a surgeon. There are so many conflicting reports on what is "must be a workaholic" and "easy" specialties (ROADS). But the data online shows that surgeons have much lower burnout rates than classically "easy" specialties. Can you add your opinion about hours worked vs burnout and how it adds to being gratified with your work? Every experience I have with a surgeon is fantastic but there is so much rhetoric online about me not having free time, divorcing my wife, not seeing my kids, and being egotistic, which is where the saying that you should only do surgery if you love the OR more than anything in the world. I've had people tell me that if I like anatomy and whatnot I should do anaesthesia or rads, but I personally just do not vibe with those, and I am just an easily bored person who gets energized and more importantly happier when I am actively working on something with a team requiring focus. But again, I am just a med student.
