Three of the most recognizable villains in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy were secretly played by the same man. Lawrence Makoare first appeared in The Fellowship of the Ring beneath the enormous prosthetics of Lurtz — the Uruk-hai commander responsible for killing Boromir. The character made such an impression that Peter Jackson brought Makoare back for The Return of the King. This time, he didn't play just one villain. He played TWO. Makoare became Gothmog, the horribly deformed Orc commander who leads Sauron's armies during the siege of Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. But underneath one of the trilogy's most elaborate costumes, he was also the Witch-king of Angmar. That means the Uruk-hai who kills Boromir, the Orc commanding the assault on Gondor AND the Lord of the Nazgûl who eventually faces Éowyn were all performed by Lawrence Makoare. Peter Jackson later praised Makoare's ability to push enormous amounts of energy through heavy prosthetic masks, which helps explain why the production kept finding new monsters for him to become. Makoare himself once joked about the strange situation while filming The Return of the King. Because he played both Gothmog and the Witch-king, he pointed out that one of his characters was essentially the boss of the other: "I play my own boss." And despite being responsible for three memorable villains across the trilogy, most viewers never actually see the actor's real face. Not bad for one performer hidden underneath several layers of Orc, Uruk-hai and Nazgûl.
