If you’re new to the world of feral cat colonies or rescue, you may find yourself wondering “why are dental issues so common?!”. “You have to take ANOTHER cat in for a dental???” While sometimes tooth issues are random and unique to the cat, there is also a connection to why it seems like street cats suffer from the same problems. Stomatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the mouth in cats, where they often present with severe pain, red inflamed gums, drooling, difficulty eating, and weight loss. Many outdoor cats are disproportionately impacted by stomatitis due to the lack of vaccination against common cat illnesses. While not every cat who has calicivirus will get stomatitis, every cat with stomatitis has also had calicivirus. This is a very contagious and common viral infection that presents with upper respiratory symptoms and ulcers. The real kicker is that calicivirus is preventable 🥺 FVRCP is the common core cat vaccine that most of us with pet cats will receive from the vet on a routine basis. The “C” in FVRCP protects against calicivirus. But because street cats are rarely vaccinated or maybe only receive a single shot instead of a full series, they wind up catching the virus at some point in their life. Most cats will survive calicivirus, especially with supportive care, but they’re not out of the woods. In some cats, that will morph into stomatitis during their lifetime - either a year down the line or 10. The typical protocol for stomatitis cats is to receive a full mouth extraction. No matter how clean their teeth are with regular dentals, plaque will still occur. And since stomatitis cats become allergic to their own plaque, they will repeatedly have issues until all teeth have been removed. Dental health is so important with cats, but it becomes critical and life saving once stomatitis has occurred and a cat is suffering. Want to be proactive to prevent it in the first place? Vaccinate! If you’d like to help support us in getting Croissant, Cindy, and Marlboro their dental surgeries (which will likely result in full mouth extractions), please donate to @tubbytabbyrescue ❤️‍🩹🦷🪥 #stomatitis #catrescue #dental
