Btw he was always aggressive and hostile even before he went to the hotel. He always had mental issues and alcohol issues. There's little signs and things each character says throughout the movie that clearly shows and tells us that he was. The evil in the hotel that was alive just made it worse made him reach his break point used his mental issues to make lash out against his family. Possessing Jack in a way to continue the brutal sacrifices basically.
