The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is essentially a small third jet engine located in the tail cone of the airplane. Unlike the main engines, its purpose isn’t to move the plane forward, but to provide power when the main engines are turned off. Primary Roles • Main Engine Starting: Modern jet engines are too large to start with just a battery. The APU provides high-pressure “bleed air” to spin the main engines up to the speed required for them to start. • Ground Power: While parked at the gate, the APU runs the aircraft’s electrical systems (lights, cockpit screens) and the air conditioning/heating so passengers stay comfortable before the main engines are started. • Emergency Backup: If an engine fails during flight, the APU can be started in mid-air to act as a backup generator, ensuring the pilots still have power for flight controls and navigation. Why is it in the tail? Placing the APU at the very back of the aircraft keeps it away from fuel tanks and passenger areas for safety.
