I'm back !!!!! The Berbers, or Amazighs (in Tamazight: Imaziɣen, ⵉⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵏ in Neo-Tifinagh or ⵎⵣⵗⵏ in Traditional Tifinagh), are an indigenous ethnic group of North Africa. Known in antiquity as Libyans, the Berbers have borne various names throughout history, such as Mazices, Moors, Numidians, Gaetulians, Garamantes, and others. They are distributed across an area stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River in West Africa. This area covers nearly five million square kilometers.[18] The majority of Berbers live in North Africa: they are found in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Egypt, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and also in the Canary Islands.[19] Large diasporas live in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Canada, and other European countries.[20][21] Today, most Berbers are Sunni Muslims,[22] but there are also Ibadite Berbers (in the Nafusa Mountains and Zwara in Libya, Djerba in Tunisia, and the M'zab Valley and Ouargla in Algeria[23]), Jewish[24], and Christian[25] Berbers. Berber identity is generally broader than language and ethnicity, encompassing the entire history and geography of North Africa. The Berbers are not a completely homogeneous ethnic group, and they comprise a range of societies and ancestries. The unifying forces among the Berber people may be a common language, a shared origin, and a collective identification with Berber heritage, culture, and history. Historically, the Berbers spoke Berber languages, classified within the Afroasiatic language family. There are estimated to be between 28 and 38 million Berber speakers in North Africa.[1][26] The number of ethnic Berbers (including non-Amazigh speakers) is likely higher, as many Amazigh people no longer speak Berber, but rather Maghrebi Arabic.
