@haleykloha: Lots of discourse lately on #adoption and I want to add in the component we don’t talk about: adoption mirrors abuse dynamics and is upheld by systems and institutions #domesticabuseawareness
the idea that closed adoption is even allowed is insane to me, the child is 100% completely entitled to know basic information about where they come from, especially by the time they’re adult

I dont understand why being adopted suddenly mean you dont get to know who and where you come from. What makes adoptees different that they dont get to know a HUGE part of what makes them who they are?

People forget, too, that in many cases the adoption was “open” until the adoptive parents choose to seal it up and keep the child from their family

I had no idea about the inner implications of adoption until working in a residential treatment center for teens and preteen with developmental trauma, specifically surrounding adoption/abuse/neglect. kids adopted from birth had physiological changes to their brain from the stress hormones from their mothers and the trauma of loss of their birth family. Many parents were just trying to do right by their kids (knowing better, doing better) but I was baffled at the sheer number of parents who sent their children to treatment because they were "broken" or they didn't turn out the way the parents wanted. I had always thought I would want to adopt, but now it wpuld only be if the child's mom specifically wanted to be a part of our family too.

When my mom had my older sister at 16 they waited until my grandmother was not in the room and tricked her into signing her rights away and because my mom was freshly postpartum young and had a severe learning disability they convinced her it was release papers for them to leave the hospital my grandmother helped my mom get her back

I think most adoptions in general end up in DV than most people think. We were adopted at 10 years old, and the only reason we agreed to be adopted by the person we were given to was because we were told no one else would want us because of our age. we ended up having to escape the adoptive parent at 18 due to abuse. it's sad how terrible the system truly is. it's usually framed as you have to pick the "lesser evil"

I used to babysit for a family that adopted all their babies. they changed their names and were very protective of their kids. I was told it was because a few of them.have crazy borth parents/families they had to be protected from. they adopted from LDS services. and feom what ever learned thats a whole rabbit whole that makes me question their motives now.

This is the real function of pregnancy crisis centers, in my experience. CPS hunted my kid after I went to one while enduring dv. Nobody wanted to help us.

💯 So many can’t handle these truths about adoption. So many factors go into making adoption thrive and it is never for the benefit for bio parent or adopted child. This closed adoption topic that has blown up is crazy!!

My brother and sister were adopted into one family, one sister and I were adopted into a second family, and one brother was adopted into a third family. We all grew up within 20 minutes of each other. We could have been in each other's lives. We could have had playdates and phone calls. I'm so happy I went looking for answers and found them as we're great friends now, but we lost a lot of years.

not an adoptee but aged out of foster care, the amount of people who where given up to the system by their adoptive parents is insane

Why would the child want to know their birth people? The child isn't in their care for a reason. The only thing that should be required is pertinent medical information.

it‘s insane that birth certificates get changed. adoptive parents should be happy about an adoption certificate, no need to change the human‘s history!

I met my birth mother and she was worried what people would think of her. I said who cares we are grown adults. Thank God I found her it brought closure. ❤
