People in San Francisco go abalone diving for fun. Locals used to all use abalone shells as ashtrays in the 90s. It was so popular it’s banned until 2036 to let abalone populations recover. It’s not dangerous at all, it’s easy and fun and complete novice divers with no equipment do it
