@iwishiwastheredude: “Leaving on a Jet Plane” was John Denver’s first big commercial breakthrough — but not because of his own recording. Denver wrote the song in 1966, but it didn’t become famous until Peter, Paul & Mary recorded it in 1969. Their version became the trio’s only No. 1 hit, which is wild considering how iconic they already were in the folk world. Because of that success, Denver suddenly went from being a little-known songwriter playing small clubs to someone the major labels took seriously.
