The description is a wrong mix of 2 different occasions in Spartan history. The Persians in the battle of Thermopylae told them that "our arrows are so many that they will cover the Sun" to which the Spartans replied with "good, we will fight in shade". Later in history, when Philip and his son Alexander were uniting whole of the vast Greek world against Persia, the Spartans resisted. Philip sent them a letter saying "if I come to Laconia, I will destroy everything" to which the Spartans replied back to him with a simple letter saying "If."
