This was my first winter in Nagano after moving here from Kyoto, and here are top three things I’ve learned: 1. It’s not just about skiing. Nagano’s ski slopes are unreal, but there’s so much more to this place. Beautifully preserved old streets in cities like Matsumoto, Obuse, and Ueda, cozy onsen towns and hidden temples and shrines. And don’t even get me started on the food - Nagano’s miso ramen is hands down the richest, most flavorful I’ve ever had. 2. The skiing mindset changes throughout the season. At the start of winter, I was on the slopes constantly - every free moment was a chance to ski. But then, as the season went on, I got comfortable. “I’ll go tomorrow,” I told myself. And somehow, tomorrow turned into next week. Now that winter is almost over, I feel this sudden urgency - like I didn’t ski enough. So now, every free day is spent squeezing in as many runs as possible before the season says goodbye. 3. The electricity bills are… unexpected. My first full winter bill in Nagano came in at 49,500 yen ($330) for December 12 to January 14. For context, my highest bill ever in Kyoto was 19,000 yen ($130). It helped me to make a decision - I will 100% have a pellet stove in my future home. No hesitation. Now that I’ve seen Nagano through every season, I can officially say - I love living here more than I ever imagined.
