I don’t know why anyone is shocked, they haven’t been allowed to touch their engines for years. Do we think they haven’t been working on theoretical systems for years and years?

I actually know the answer to this and I’m outside of any nda’s. 1) they’ve thinned the valve face right down so it flexes like a drum skin. 2) filled the hollow valve with a material that expands, pushed the valve face outwards into the combustion chamber and reduces chamber volume. They already did hollow filled valves before, but now they are using the filling as a medium to expand and push and bow outwards against the thinned valve face

A 2 piece "piston within a piston" having a type of phase change material sandwiched between the 2 parts so the top of the piston dome telescopes out could do the trick.

VCR (variable compression ratio) engines have existed for decades. Many manufacturers have experimented tho the only production vcr is in the infinity qx50 made by Nissan. An additional linkage from crank to con rod.

Or just use the nitrous trick. Calibrated ringgap, that allows higher blowby when cold and closes when heated.

These engine regs were written a while ago and you’d think all the teams would have noticed right away the change of the compression ratio only at ambient temps every team should have spotted this loophole right away. The complaints are only coming out now

My theory it’s the crankshaft length expanding with heat, letting the piston be lower and higher depending the part of the stroke it is, which will increase the compression ratio.

They don't change it dynamically. The engine tolerances are loose when at ambient temp. As the engine gets to operational temps the tolerances tighten and increases the compression. It is all about the rules allowing for compression check at ambient temp, they should change the rule to check it at operational temps.

Solids don't expand in that way. If you took a donut shape and heated it, the inner hole would get bigger in diameter by a factor proportional to coeff. of thermal expansion. Think about scalar factors in geometry

way back when guys used to add wax to the top of the pistons so they could get through inspections with the set displacement. as soon as it warmed up the wax would melt and blow out the exhaust. but what if Mercedes used a bimetallic piston dome in the same way

Having the connecting rod expand, wouldn’t help because it would also reduce the volume at bottom, dead center, having the crank expand would probably be the most effective because it would reduce volume at top dead center and increase volume at bottom dead center, but seems like it would be the most difficult to accomplish reliably. The simplest seems to be having material somewhere near the head of the piston that expands.
