@glutenfreegf_: As a Mexican American woman, this Christmas, I'm honoring my deep roots on Turtle Island (the indigenous name for North America) by making holiday treats that celebrate ancestral ingredients. I'm taking the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of ingredients indigenous to this land. I've put my own spin on these sweet blue corn tamales that are traditional to the indigenous people of the southwest. I followed @thefancynavajo’s recipe from her cookbook but added the berry compote she suggests to serve with to the inside! They are made with roasted blue cornmeal and juniper ash and are made vegan as is traditional. The blue cornmeal flavor is so delicate and robust these are my new go to sweet tamales for the season #vegan #tamales #glutenfree #tamaleseason #tamale

Theres a lot of misinformation here. First, “Native American sweet blue corn tamales” suggests a single, pan‑Indigenous, historic category that does not exist. Husk‑wrapped, steamed tamales are a Mesoamerican food technology with deep Central Mexican roots; what she is actually making is a contemporary fusion that borrows Diné blue‑corn–plus–juniper‑ash technique and shoves it into a Mexican tamal format, then universalizes it as “Native American.” That kind of flattening erases both the specificity of Navajo foodways (which traditionally present blue corn as mush, dumplings, breads, etc.) and the independent Mesoamerican tamal tradition. Second, her temporal and geographic language around blue corn is sloppy. Saying “blue corn originated in the South…over 4,000 years ago” imposes a U.S. regional frame onto a Mesoamerican domesticate. Maize was domesticated in southern Mexico and arrived in the U.S. Southwest roughly 4,000 years ago; Southwestern blue landraces are the result of long‑term Indigenous selection and exchange, not some vague “Southern” origin story tied to her holiday content. That is not how serious archaeobotany or population‑genetic work on maize dispersal is written.

God forbid a woman with indigenous history who’s been separated from her indigenous roots try to reconnect with it through food and sharing her recipe. It’s totally fine to correct her on things and offer constructive criticism, but sooo many of y’all are being rude as fuck for no reason. Because she’s too white presenting, y’all have an issue with it.

Another way to decolonize your Christmas list to also support the small businesses of many of indigenous and Latin American people who make these items for sale during the season

There is literally no way to decolonize a holiday that has nothing to do with Indigenous peoples.
