@sacramentourbanmedia916: A federal judge has dismissed a legal challenge brought by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce against President Donald #Trump’s decision to impose a $100,000 fee on visas for highly skilled foreign workers. In a 56-page ruling issued in Washington, U.S. District Judge #BerylHowell said Congress granted the president broad authority over immigration matters, including the power to set conditions on the entry of noncitizens. Howell wrote that lawmakers could have placed limits on that authority but chose not to do so. The lawsuit was filed by the Chamber of Commerce, which represents roughly 300,000 businesses nationwide, along with the Association of American Universities, an organization representing 69 research institutions. Both groups argued that the Trump administration overstepped its authority when it introduced the six-figure fee for new H-1B visa applications in September. The administration has framed the policy as part of a larger effort to prioritize American workers. The increased visa costs came alongside a wider immigration crackdown that has included large-scale deportations and the suspension of policies allowing asylum seekers to remain in the U.S. while their cases are reviewed. H-1B visas are typically issued to professionals working in specialized fields, most commonly in the technology sector. Software engineers, IT specialists, and technical project managers are among the roles that frequently qualify. The visas generally allow recipients to work in the U.S. for three to six years. Government data shows that India accounted for the majority of H-1B recipients last year, making up about 71% of approved applications. China followed at a much lower rate, with just under 12%. Prior to the fee increase, the federal government issued 85,000 H-1B visas annually, largely for tech-related positions. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has already received enough applications to meet the cap for the visa year beginning Oct. 1. Among the top corporate users of the program last year were Amazon, with more than 10,000 approved visas, and Microsoft and Meta, each with over 5,000 approvals.#viral #fyp
