Technically, however, it's not fair to compare regular plural with words that end with -lf. It's typical for words that end with -lf to has -lves in plural. Shelf, Self, half, calf, wolf all end with -lves in plural. What I'm trying to say is, it's not random that elf becomes elves in plural.
