@alixandrakupcik: Every Christmas I return to this. On Christmas Day 1989, just weeks after the Berlin Wall fell, Leonard Bernstein conducted Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Berlin. For my family, and for so many others, this was more than music. It was freedom. An ode to joy became an ode to freedom. Freedom is the ultimate gift. I hope it moves you the way it moves me. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas.
National symphony needs to get this queued up for when it happens

I was in West Germany when the wall fell. It remains a time in my life that is almost indescribable to those who didnt experience it. There was a feeling, tone, that took over the entire country it was absolutely surreal.

It should be mentioned that “Freude” (joy) was changed to “Freiheit” (freedom).

I was driving my car to work and the announcer said, “They’re dancing on top of the wall in Berlin” and I swear to you I teared up. When you grew up under the shadow of nuclear Armageddon (my school had an air raid siren in the parking lot FFS!), it was…well, an amazing moment.

I was 19 at the time the wall went down. I was on holiday in Winterberg with my parents. It was a immense privelage to witness it in Germany itself We celebrated with all the people in the neighbourhood. Very emotional. Later I went to the "the Wall" concert in Berlin.
