Semester Starter Kit (🔗 in Bio) Introduction In school, I never thought I was a great student. I was very average. Most of high school, I was under a 2.5 GPA and somehow managed to graduate. I played basketball, rapped, and did music. School was not hard, but it was not easy either. I never gave one thought to being a better student. When I started college, I was able to pursue something I was interested in for the first time: music. I started as a music business major. Eventually, I could not get past the music theory courses, and I decided to switch my major. My thought process was that I just was not good enough, or that I was not the type of student who could do something challenging like music theory. I had no idea what to pursue next. I remember flipping through the catalog of majors looking for the easiest option, and I landed on communications (no shade). But when I filtered out my options based on level of difficulty, I ended up with fewer choices. And in the process, I likely crossed out even the things I was passionate about. Even in communications, I found out the hard way that there is no easy path. Public speaking, communication research papers, statistics classes, writing a film script, and editing required the same level of difficulty as music theory. I was able to make my way through to graduation, but I learned how to get by, not how to get better. For many of us, physical and creative work feels natural because it is tangible. But we struggle with the practice of “knowledge work” because it seems invisible, with less payoff. The approach and methods are very different and run counter to the habits we acquired in grade school. It took major setbacks and hard lessons in my 30s to learn that the only way to achieve what I wanted was by enduring mentally uncomfortable periods long enough to see the results. After trying to get my master’s multiple times in my 20s, at 37 I would try again. This time, my mindset was different. I intentionally pursued a top program I would have never gotten into before, one that involved master’s-level statistics and research. When I started, I didn’t feel any smarter. But this time around, instead of finding reasons why I was not “getting it,” I “found a way” to be successful. The way was through the study habits and process in this guide. I entered grad school with a 2.5 undergraduate GPA and exited the program with a 3.9, all while teaching as a visiting lecturer, being a husband and father, and doing consulting on the side. #StudyTips #collegetips #collegestudents
