My example of how people only find these traits annoying in women is Ira Glass from This American Life. He does upspeak, has vocal fry, and says “like” a lot. No one complains about him like they do about every woman who speaks into a mic.

You’re still missing some another is ableism. A lot of people have pet peeves surrounding using filler words such as “um” “uh” etc. These are commonly used by people with a stutter. In fact, they are listed as a characteristic of stutters

Yess vocal fry and uptalking (and also valley girl accents etc) cause so much vitriol it's crazy. And language in general also has misogyny and racism rooted in it, but overall this is why sociolinguistics is so interesting!

Ty for acknowledging this! had a prof for biocomms that didn’t mark women down for use of filler words! Sure she would note it as an area for improvement to the fluidity of presentation but bc it’s an adaptation we’ve developed to be able to “take space” it wasn’t inherently seen as detrimental to the quality of our work!

immediately searched for examples of male vocal fry and like, Morgan Freeman! Everyone knows his voice, he's famous partly because people love how he sounds. Not once has a male voice made me think of vocal fry, unconscious unchallenged bias is a crazy thing. Thanks so much for this video!
