The NBA was formed in 1949 by merging the BAA and NBL, growing from early financial struggles and a slow pace into a global powerhouse. Following the 1954 shot-clock introduction, the 1960s Celtics dynasty, the 1976 ABA merger, the 1980s Magic/Bird rivalry, and Michael Jordan’s 1990s dominance, it became a high-scoring, multi-national spectacle, officially established on June 6, 1946.

Founding and Early Years (1946–1950s)
The Beginning: The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 1946 by ice hockey arena owners looking to fill empty dates. The first game was played between the New York Knickerbockers and Toronto Huskies on November 1, 1946.
The Merger: On August 3, 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to create the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The Shot Clock (1954): To combat boring, slow games (including a notorious 19-18 game), the league introduced the 24-second shot clock, dramatically increasing scoring and pace.
First Stars: George Mikan led the Minneapolis Lakers to the first dynasty, winning five titles in six seasons.

Celtics Dominance: The 1960s belonged to the Boston Celtics, who won 11 championships in 13 seasons (including eight straight from 1959–1966) led by Bill Russell.
Wilt Chamberlain: In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain set the unbreakable record of 100 points in a single game.
ABA Merger (1976): The NBA survived a challenge from the rival American Basketball Association (ABA), eventually merging and absorbing four teams (Nets, Nuggets, Pacers, Spurs) and adopting the 3-point line.
