One way to think about stimming is that it’s often the brain’s attempt to help regulate itself. Many stimming behaviors provide sensory input that the nervous system is actively seeking, especially through the vestibular (movement and balance) and proprioceptive (body awareness and pressure) systems. Instead of viewing stimming as the problem, we can ask a different question: “What is the brain trying to get?” When we identify the sensory input a child is seeking, we can often provide that input in more intentional and therapeutic ways. The goal isn’t necessarily to stop the behavior. The goal is to better understand what the nervous system needs. At our clinic, we use the information we gather from a child’s sensory-seeking behaviors to help guide intervention strategies. By providing the brain with the input it’s craving, we can help fill that sensory cup proactively rather than having the child constantly seek ways to fill it themselves. Sometimes the behavior is the clue. The real question is what the nervous system is trying to tell us.
