did you know that there are different hearing thresholds for children vs adults?? For children, normal hearing levels are between 0 -15-20dB. For adults, normal hearing levels are between 0-25dB! This is why it is SO important to go to a pediatric audiologist if you think your child has hearing loss. Often times, an audiologist who primarily works with adults patients, will incorrectly diagnose a child with normal hearing when they have a mild hearing loss! This is because if the results are between 0-25dB they will tell the parents their child’s hearing levels are normal (because that’s what they are used to for adults), when in reality they have a mild hearing loss and should be fitted with hearing aids ASAP! Pediatric audiologists receive more specialized training and practice regarding early detection, age appropriate testing, children’s hearing loss, and working with parents/families. I cannot stress the importance of going to a pediatric audiologist!! It is also super important to go to an audiologist that is an expert in programming either hearing aids or cochlear implants. They are very different! I would not want to go to an audiologist who specializes in hearing aids when I need cochlear implant programming. I still go to my pediatric audiologist and she has assured me I can stay with her even though I am not considered “pediatric” ever since I turned 18 😅 The reason I will stay with her is because she knows me and my hearing loss well. She is also an expert at programing cochlear implants and I trust that she knows what she is doing to help me get the best access to speech! #deaf #audiologyawarenessmonth #deafcommunity #deafawareness #deafculture #deafworld #deafbaby #hardofhearing #asl #americansignlanguage #cochlearimplant #nucleus7 #n7 #audiology #earlyintervention
