In the 1990s, when Fuji music was largely dominated by Yoruba musicians, one Igbo performer made his name in the genre. His name was Sunday Tua Adesokan, popularly known as Sunny T. . Fondly called “Omo Nna To N Ko Fuji” (the Igbo man who sings Fuji), Sunny T gained recognition for his musical style and ability to connect with audiences across ethnic and linguistic boundaries. . His rise to prominence came with the release of Idan Amani under Sarolaj Records, headed by veteran music promoter Alhaji Tunji Sarumi. The recording became one of the works most closely identified with his career, establishing his name among Fuji music enthusiasts during the 1990s. . Sunny T maintained a longstanding professional relationship with Sarumi, who also owned Eru Owa Records, a prominent name in Nigeria’s Fuji recording industry. Over the years, Sunny T recorded several albums and continued performing well beyond the decade that brought him fame. . In 2009, he released Step Up in London, followed by Capable in August 2011. The latter, a 15-track album released under Omo Owo Records, included songs such as “Desokan Ti De,” “Eegun Onidan” and “Agbaje Lo,” a tribute to the late Fuji maestro Sikiru Ayinde Barrister. . Sadly, on July 1, 2012, Sunny T passed away in Lagos after a brief illness at the age of 44. Just two days earlier, he had performed at an event in Epe, Lagos. His sudden d£ath brought an end to a career that had stretched across several decades. . Today, we remember Sunny T Adesokan, a musician who carved out his own place in a predominantly Yoruba musical tradition and contributed to the rich diversity of Nigeria’s Fuji music scene. . May his soul continue to rest in peace. 🕊️ . . #NostalgicSoundNg #SunnyTAdesokan #IdanAmani #FujiMusic #90sNostalgia
